After 20 years, Mars Express Space Craft Gets a Windows 98 Upgrade

Mars Express Spacecraft is a Mars Mission from the European Space Agency (ESA), that is working since last 19 years.

The Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) instrument on the spacecraft has been using Windows 98 since its launch.

The MARSIS instrument played a key role in the discovery of a huge underground aquifer of liquid water on Mars in 2018

The new update will allow the Mars Express Spacecraft to see beneath the surfaces of Mars and its moon Phobos in more detail than ever before.

The new software will aim at improving the signal reception and onboard data processing to further enhance the quality and increase the amount of data sent to Earth.

Since the MARSIS was working on the same OS since last 19 years, it faced numerous performance challenges.

The new Windows 98  upgrade will increase the Mars Space Craft performance by 5X.
