China's science ministry said its giant telescope may have found signals from alien civilizations.
They said signals were identified this year by the "Sky Eye" telescope, the world's largest.
The Sky Eye is China's 500-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST,) the only giant, single-dish, radio telescope in the world.
Researchers with Beijing Normal University found "several cases of possible technological traces and extraterrestrial civilizations from outside the earth"
"China's top alien hunter" Cosmologist Zhang Tongjie said FAST located "several narrow-band electromagnetic signals different from the past."
FAST, which is extremely sensitive to low-frequency radio waves, joined the Breakthrough Listen SETI project in October 2016 to search for intelligent extraterrestrial communications in the Universe.
It has been looking for alien life since becoming fully operational in 2020, having been fitted out with back-end equipment designed for the task a couple of years earlier
Zhang said that two sets of suspicious data were found in 2020 while processing data collected in 2019, and another in 2022 from observation data of exoplanet targets.
The possibility that the suspicious signal is some kind of radio interference is also very high, and it needs to be further confirmed and ruled out. This may be a long process. - Zhang
